TEXAS GOVERNORS: MIRIAM “MA” FERGUSON, COKE STEVENSON, ALLAN SHIVERS and JAMES ALLRED Displayed on a single 18×13 board are four individual pieces signed by colorful governors of the Lone Star state. Collection comprised of 1) Signature: “Allan Shivers”, 5×5. Clipped from page bearing his official gubernatorial letterhead. Toned. Moisture damage effecting signature. 2) Autograph Sentiment Signed: “Dear Ed/Good luck to you/sinisterly/ James Allred” , 5½x2. Heavily toned. Mounting residue shown through. Otherwise, fine condition.; 3) Signature: “Coke R. Stevenson”, 8×2½. On his personal letterhead from the Stevenson Ranch. Moisture damage effecting signature. Toned. 4) Signature: “Miriam A. Ferguson/Governor of Texas/1925-1927/1933-1935″, 4½x2½. Heavily toned. Mounting residue shown through. Otherwise, fine condition. MIRIAM “MA” FERGUSON (1875-1961) served two nonconsecutive terms as Governor of Texas, during the years she indicates here. Her husband, James “Pa” Ferguson, was removed from office of Governor by impeachment, and was thus forbidden to seek elective office in the State again. “Ma” Ferguson won election on a pledge to carry out his policies. She was the first female Governor of Texas, and the second in the nation, taking office one week after Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming was sworn in to replace her late husband. JAMES V. ALLRED (1899-1959) was Texas Governor from 1935-1939, breaking with many of his fellow Texas Democrats by staunchly supporting Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. FDR appointed him a federal district court judge (1939-1942), a post he gave up in an unsuccessful bid for the US Senate. President Truman reappointed him to the federal bench (1949-1959). COKE R. STEVENSON (1888-1975) was Governor of Texas 1941-1947.
