A few years ago I was working with a marketing team at a large corporation. We were having one of those typical endless, aimless meetings. It was well into lunchtime, and the technical expert, Mary, was starting to get cranky from hunger and had mentioned it several times.
So I said, “Let’s go get some lunch. We need to feed Mary.” They all looked at me like I was crazy. Oops! They were not from Texas. I guess they had visions of our taking turns spooning pablum into her mouth.
Not at all! “We need to feed _____,” is just a Texas expression that is short for “This person is hungry and needs to eat, and as good Texas hosts, hostesses, or just considerate associates, we should accommodate the needs of our guest/friend/customer/associate by either providing food or adjourning to a location where we can all get some food.”
Now, see, the Texas version is much shorter and does not sound like lecturing other people on good manners. So that has to be better, don’t you think?
Well, keep it in mind, y’all. Just in case.
