Bigger’n Dallas stands for “bigger than Dallas.” What it means when said by a Texan, though, is a little more complicated.
This expression harks back to a time when Dallas was the biggest, best-known town in Texas. It’s hard to remember now that Houston is the fourth-largest city in the US and sprawls out for so many miles, but once upon a time Dallas was the biggest city in the whole region. It was there for all to see from miles away—impossible to ignore or deny.
So “bigger’n Dallas” is used to describe an outrageously obvious social transgression or some impossible-to-miss object or event. It can be used for public acts for which there is zero deniability. For example, you might hear “So at her ex-boyfriend’s wedding, she just sashayed up and kissed the groom right on the mouth, bigger’n Dallas!”
Or it can be used to indicate that an object is (or was) in plain sight and simply impossible to miss (even if, in fact, it was missed for awhile). For example, “I searched for that truck for 45 minutes! And there it was the whole time, parked right by the entrance to the mall, bigger’n Dallas!”
As with most Texas expressions, “bigger’n Dallas” can be used either critically (as in the wedding example) or jokingly, or even to express admiration for outrageous behavior.
Note: This expression does not work with any other city. It’s OK to pronounce it clearly, “bigger than Dallas,” but it doesn’t sound natural that way. Maybe it just takes practice?
